title: Target Languages
description: Choose the listing languages Apptonomy analyzes, translates, and monitors for a project.
---

Target Languages are the store listing languages Apptonomy works in for a project. Each language you select is audited, translated, and monitored separately. Set them per store — your App Store language set and your Google Play language set are configured independently, because the two stores support different languages.

## Before you start

- You need the **editor** role on the project.
- The project must have a linked store. Your **primary language** is read from the linked store listing and can't be changed here.
- The number of target languages you can enable is set by your plan. See [Plans and entitlements](/docs/billing/plans-and-entitlements). Translating and localizing those languages requires a plan that includes localization.

## Set your target languages

### 1. Open the Target Languages settings

In the project's settings, open the **Target Languages** tab. The page always applies to the store currently selected in the store switcher. Switch stores to configure each store's language set.

The header reads: "Choose the *[store]* listing languages Apptonomy should analyze, translate, and publish for this project."

### 2. Confirm your primary language

The **Primary Language** card shows the primary language of your app on the selected store. This is the source language Apptonomy translates *from*. It's always enabled and can't be removed. To change it, change the primary language on your store listing.

### 3. Select the languages to target

Under **Target Languages**, check each language you want Apptonomy to work in. The list only shows languages the selected store supports, so the App Store list is shorter than the Google Play list. Use **Select All** or **Deselect All** to move quickly.

For App Store languages, each language shows region badges:

- A **blue "Regions"** badge lists the storefronts where this language is the *default* language.
- An **amber "Regions"** badge lists the storefronts where this language is an *additional* (fallback) language.

Click a badge to see the exact storefronts. These reflect how Apple picks which language a shopper sees; [How Listing Localization Works](/docs/guides/listing-localization) explains the selection model.

### 4. Add a translation hint (optional)

Next to each selected language is a **Translation hint** field. Use it to steer translations for that language — for example, a formality level, a term to keep in English, or a regional spelling convention. The hint only applies to the language it sits next to.

### 5. Save

Click **Save**. When you add languages, Apptonomy starts translating your listing into them and confirms: "Now translating into *[languages]*. Progress shows in the bottom bar." When you remove languages, it confirms the removal and keeps the remaining languages up to date.

## Verify it worked

- The **Active target languages** section lists every enabled language as a badge.
- The counter at the top right reads **"N of M used"** (or **"N used"** if your plan has no market limit), where M is your plan's limit.
- Newly added languages begin translating; watch the progress bar at the bottom of the screen.

## Troubleshooting

### The counter is red and Save prompts me to upgrade

You've selected more target languages than your plan allows. The counter turns red once you pass the limit, and saving surfaces an upgrade prompt instead of applying the change. Deselect languages to get back within your limit, or upgrade to a plan with a higher market limit. See [Plans and entitlements](/docs/billing/plans-and-entitlements).

### A language I need isn't in the list

The list is filtered to the languages the selected store supports. A language that the App Store doesn't support won't appear while the App Store is selected, even if Google Play supports it. Switch stores to confirm, and check the [App Store](/docs/reference/appstore-languages) and [Google Play](/docs/reference/playstore-languages) supported-language tables.

### The primary language is wrong

The primary language mirrors your store listing and is read-only in Apptonomy. Update the primary language on the store listing itself, then re-sync the project.
